Silk Road returns to Harvard for WinterSession and four world premieres

Th eSilk Road Ensemble returned to Harvard on January 14 for 10 intensive days of collaborating with Harvard WinterSessions students and to workshop four new SRE commissions. The composers that joined the group for fun in the snow were:
Glenn Kotche

Vijay Iyer

David Bruce and,

the SRE’s own: Kojiro Umezaki. The results of their work were presented as a work in progress for a full house at Harvard’s Kirkland house.

Harvard Residency with the Silk Road Ensemble and Yo-Yo Ma

Gramley is in residence this week at Harvard University. This is the first residency of a five-year plan for the Silk Road Project to work with the Harvard Community in a variety of initiatives. This first residency will include two concerts:

Monday, Sept 26 at 7PM (New commissions by Ljova and Michael Ward-Bergeman)
and,

a welcome show on Tuesday, Sept 27 at 7PM (With Yo-Yo Ma)

Both shows are at Harvard’s New College Theatre.

Gramley and Driskill-Smith commission new work for the Duo

Gramley and Clive Driskill-Smith have commissioned Ann Arbor-based composer Stephen Eddins to write a new work for their organ-percussion duo: Organized Rhythm. Begun as a companion piece for the Duo’s arrangement of Holst’s ‘The Planets’ (Mars, Venus, Jupiter), PLUTO will be premiered at the AGO National Conference in Nashville next summer, with preview performances this fall in Macon, GA and Greenville, SC. Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar Final Shows!

The students of the 2011 JSPS will present the results of their work during this 2-week intensive with two shows at Juilliard’s studio 309:

Intensives concert: With special guests: Jeffrey Irving and Javier Diaz 7:30 PM Thursday, July 28.

Final Percussion Ensemble Concert featuring works by Chavez, Alfieri, Streber, Lansky, Corea (Arr. Alcorn), Feigenbaum and Zivkovic.

Marlboro Music Festival in August

Gramley will return to Marlboro Music Festival in mid-August for their finale concert of the Beethoven Choral Fantasy. This is a Marlboro tradition shared now by soloists Mitsuko Uchida and Richard Goode. Gramley first attended Marlboro in 1994 for a full summer of Bartok, Crumb and Horne.

Silk Road Ensemble at NJPAC and New Haven’s Shubert Theatre

Summer 2011 MPULSE Percussion Institute at the University of Michigan

Gramley will again direct the MPULSE Percussion Institute at the University of Michigan from July 3-16 2011. The third installment of this successful program will feature comprehensive college, university and conservatory prep for high-school age percussionists.
