Dance with the devil? Paganini did. At least that’s the rumor. How else could he possess such electrifying virtuosity? Rachmaninoff peppered his romantic rhapsody with snippets of the Gregorian Chant for the Dead, perhaps attempting to redeem Paganini’s soul. Forbidden passion prevails in Messiaen’s mammoth Turangalila Symphony. His dance blurred the boundary between physical and spiritual love and flirted with the consequences associated with earthly desire. 8:00 PM The Detroit Symphony Orchestra • Peter Oundjian, conductor • Stewart Goodyear, piano • Jean Laurendeau, ondes-martenot RACHMANINOFF Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini MESSIAEN Turangalila Symphony

Detroit Symphonhy Orchestra
Concert
